Ranger outpost attacked in Yala

A paramilitary ranger outpost in Raman district of Yala province was attacked on Thursday night, but no troops were hurt, police said.

Pol Lt Col Suphachat Yeekongwang, chief of Jakua police station in Raman, said gunmen opened fire with assault rifles at a ranger outpost in Ban Tanoh Poyoh in tambon Kehror of Raman district about 9pm.

The rangers fired back and  about five minutes later the attackers stopped shooting and left, he said.

A security source said that security services in the deep South had warned that key members of an insurgent group had ordered their followers to attack police and soldiers in the three southernmost provinces, particularly  in the more remote areas, from March 28 to April 4.

This insurgent group was opposed to the peace talks between the National Security Council delegation and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgency movement in Malaysia.
