North track still closed after derailment

Railway work crews are still repairing the damaged track in Lampang after a passenger train derailment in the early hours of Wednesday.

An official of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said passengers on Chiang Mai-bound trains on Wednesday could at present go no further than Lampang station. They would continue their trip to Chiang Mai by bus services arranged by the SRT if repairs were not complete when they arrived.

All trains will still depart as scheduled tonight. However the Bangkok-bound sprinter train No 12 scheduled to leave Chiang Mai at 8.45am was cancelled, the official said.

The locomotive and two cars of rapid train No 109 from Bangkok derailed three kilometres before reaching Khun Tan tunnel at 3.40am in Lampang on Wednesday.

Twelve hours after the accident, repairs gangs had stillnot been able to lift the damaged locomotive and carriages back on the tracks.

Passengers on the derailed train had been taken back to Lampang, and put on buses for Chiang Mai.
