Pongsak: Energy 'crisis' is over

The country has weathered the energy "crisis" and there is enough electricity to satisfy demand over the Songkran festival, Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisarn said on Tuesday.

The minister said demand for electricity this morning stood at 24,300 megawatts, and peak demand for the day was expected at 25,700 megawatts.

Current demand for electricity was up 1,000 megawatts from April 5, the first day of the "energy crisis" period,  because many manufacturers had resumed normal production, he said.

"However, the electricity reserve in the country’s energy system remains at 1,500 megawatts, which is enough to serve the demand for electricity from households and industry," he  said.

Mr Pongsak said the peak demand for electricity tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, is expected at 27,000 megawatts, a manageable level.

“The demand for electricity from April 11 to 14 is not worrying and therefore it we feel that the country has passed through the energy crisis,” he said.

At the cabinet meeting this morning, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra assigned him to thank the private sector and all Thai people for their cooperation with the government in an effort to save energy, he said.

The natural gas supply from Myanmar has been reduced since April 4 for annual maintenance. The gas supply disruption will end on April 12.  Thailand fuels 70% of its electricity generation with natural gas.
