Mother of driver of coma girl dies

The mother of the van driver who allegedly left a 3-year-old girl in the vehicle died on Tuesday, after suffering a stroke doctors attributed to stress.

Bhumibol Hospital officials said Jindamanee Petchbuasak died Tuesday morning of complications after a brain stroke earlier in the day. She had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday night.

Jindamanee was the mother of Santiparb Wanjai, the van driver of Anongvet Kindergarten School, who faces charges of carelessness leading to serious injuries of Manassanan Thongphu. Daoruang Srisamung, a teacher, faces the same charges.

The charges were laid after Manassanan, known as Nong Oey, was left in the closed van during the hottest part of the day last Thursday. She is in critical condition at Bangkok Hospital, with swelling of the brain caused by long exposure to the heat.

Mr Santiparb said his mother collapsed after learning that police had filed charges against him.

Wichit Boonchinnawuttikul, chief of Bang Pu police station, said police are waiting for medical reports from Bangkok Hospital to use as evidence to forward to the Samut Prakan court.

Investigators questioned Anong Khiriwong, the school owner, and Mrs Yuwares, the director, who confirmed that Mr Santiphab was the driver on that day and Mrs Daoruang was the teacher taking care of the students in the vehicle. The two will be witnesses of the case, Pol Col Wichit said.

The school is in Samut Prakan's Muang district, under the jurisdiction of Bang Poo police.

Bangkok Hospital said on Tuesday that the girl's condition had not improved, and doctors have delayed plans for an operation until she becomes stronger.
