White elephant hunt, 5 million baht reward

PHETCHABURI : A hunt is on for a possible white elephant in Kaeng Krachan National Park, with a reward of 5 million baht being offered to hunters who can capture the elephant – if it exists

The sighting of the white elephant was reported by Apichart Puangnoi, a photographer who visited Krarang Sam reservoir in tambon Pa Teng on April 10, where a pregnant elephant was found dead the day before.

Mr Apichart spotted the calf from still photos of an elephant herd he took and then reported the sighting to Park chief Chaiwat Limlikhit-aksorn.

Mr Chaiwat said he has sent a unit of forestry guards to track down the elephant calf and keep it safe from poachers.

White elephants, which have unique physical attributes including skin, nails and eyes which are pale pink or white, have been revered as a symbol of power and prosperity.

Traditionally, they are captured and presented to the King.

Mr Chaiwat said the province wrote to the palace last Wednesday to inform it of the white elephant sighting.

Phetchaburi province presented three white elephants to the monarch in 1978.

"I couldn't tell the difference when I saw the herd because it was very late in the afternoon," Mr Apichart said.

"I spotted it later in the photos. The skin is pink and so are the toes."
