Second suspect in butchered body case

Police on Wednesday questioned a man suspected of involvement in the murder and butchering of a young bank clerk whose dismembered body was found in a plastic bag in a dry canal in Chai Nat province.

Kriangkrai Khwan-on

The dismembered body was found on April 18 and later identified as Kriangkrai Khwan-on, 24, from Bangkok. Police still have not found the body's head.

Pradit Suwannaphak, 46, a noodle vendor in Uthai Thani province, was taken into custody after police found bloodstained clothes and the dead man's cell phone in his house. The suspect was released later on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Pradit, the second suspect to be questioned by detectives, was released from custody after investigators could find no irregularities in his testimony, or a clear motive tying him to the case. Members of his family and people living in the same house were also questioned by police.

Police have turned over evidence gathered at Mr Pradit's house to forensic experts for close examination.

Chaiyaporn Sai-Eng, a dentist initially suspected as the killer, has also been released from police custody.

Sanit Khwan-on, the dead man's father, had earlier contacted police. He confirmed the dismembered body was his son.

The father gave police information about his missing son and his Mitzubishi Mirage car, which was traced to the parking lot of Lat Yao Hospital in neighbouring Nakhon Sawan province.

Police said Kriangkrai was a bank employee in Bangkok. He was gay and had an intimate relationship with another man. A source said jealousy or an intention to steal the assets of the dead man are among the motives they are considering for the murder.

The limbs of the dead man were neatly severed, probably with a chainsaw operated by someone with a good knowledge of anatomy, especially the joints, police said.
