Body butcher arrested, confesses

Police have arrested a noodle shop owner and charged him with involvement in the murder and butchering of a young bank clerk whose dismembered body was found in plastic bags in a dry canal in Chai Nat.

Pradit Suwannaphak, 36, was arrested at his house in Muang district, Uthai Thani, in the late hours of Wednesday, several hours after he was questioned, taken into custody and then released.

The dismembered body was found on April 18 and later identified as Kriangkrai Khwan-on, 24, from Bangkok. Police said the victim's head was missing.

Pol Col Panya Nakwicien, deputy chief of Chai Nat police, said after his arrest Mr Pradit took police to a pond  where he said he had thrown the victim's head. A skull with a bullet wound was recovered from the pond. A plastic bucket used to carry the head to the pool was found nearby.

The pond is about nine kilometres from Mr Pradit's house in Uthai Thani.

Police said Mr Pradit confessed to the murder. He said he was angry because Kriangkrai had wanted to end their relationship.

Sanit Khwan-on, the dead man's father, had earlier contacted police. He confirmed the dismembered body was his son.

The father gave police information about his missing son and his Mitzubishi Mirage car, which was traced to the parking lot of Lat Yao Hospital in neighbouring Nakhon Sawan province.

Police said Kriangkrai was a bank employee in Bangkok. He was gay and had an intimate relationship with another man.

The limbs of the dead man were neatly severed, probably with a chainsaw operated by someone with a good knowledge of anatomy, especially the joints, police said.
