Villagers call for help in fight to stop erosion

Residents in Ban Khun Samut Chin, a seashore village in Samut Prakan have demanded the government take action to stop severe coastal erosion.

Village head Samorn Kengsamut said Ban Khun Samat Chin has faced coastal erosion for more than 30 years.

Ms Samorn was speaking at a forum to deal with land erosion in the area, located in Samut Prakan's Muang district, organised by the Isra Institute.

She said villagers can build only temporary makeshift seawalls with wood and concrete piles but these measures failed to stop erosion.

As a result, villagers want authorities to provide sustainable measures to deal with the problem.

Udorn Bunchuaylaew, assistant chief of Khun Samut Chin Tambon Administration Organisation, said several authorities had inspected erosion in the area but they were not unified in their efforts and could not formulate a workable solution.

Thanawat Jarupongsakul, from the geology department at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of science, said erosion at Ban Khun Samut Chin has spread to one kilometre over 30 years causing the loss of 18,000 rai.

The severe erosion is due to land subsidence and the rising level of the sea.

Mr Thanawat has proposed using concrete piles to form a sea wall, putting a pile in every 1.5m and building three layers of the wall in a zigzag pattern.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi, who supervises seashore environment and water resources, said he would review all proposed solutions to arresting land erosion from Phetchaburi to Chachoengsao in the next few months.

Initially, a permanent sea wall would have to be constructed along the erosion-prone areas. However, a thorough study on the project's impact would be needed before construction could take place.

Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning's deputy chief Kiatisak Chantra said his department has a project to construct a 15km sea wall from Bangkok's Bang Khunthian district to Samut Prakan's Laem Fa Pha which also covers Ban Khun Samut Chin.
