'Car window smasher' thieves nabbed

Police have arrested 11 suspects accused of smashing the windows of parked cars and stealing valuables left inside them, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said on Monday.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said the 11 suspects - 10 men and one woman - are from two gangs that work closely together. Most are in their late teens or early twenties.

The arrests came after a man filed a complaint with police that gold worth about 600,000 baht was stolen from his parked car.

Investigators following up on the case discovered the gang's hide-out in Lat Krabang district and subsequently raided it. Five people were arrested and stolen items were recovered.

Police also seized several cell phones, tablet computers and motorcycles. The suspects admitted to have bought the items with money made from selling the stolen gold.

The suspects said the rest of the money was spent during the Songkran celebration.

After interrogation, police were able to arrest six members of another gang in front of a cyber cafe in Rom Klao district.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said the two gangs worked together during their robberies, cooperating to avoid police.

Three of the suspects were already on bail on drugs and robbery charges, he said.
