Cops stood down over sex charges

Two police officers implicated in sex crimes have been suspended from duty pending criminal investigations, the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) says.

In the most recent case, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Voravit Nukulkit of Din Daeng police station stands accused of blackmailing a woman into having sex with him.

He is also alleged to have pressed wrongful drug charges against the victim.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Voravit was filmed fleeing from two men who accused the officer of blackmailing their friend.

The video clip, which shows the officer leaving an apartment with the alleged victim in Din Daeng district and then being chased by the men on foot, was posted on YouTube.

MPB chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said two other officers who were filmed picking up the officer on their motorcycle will also be investigated.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Voravit, who has been on leave in Songkhla since the alleged offence, is due to report to Din Daeng police station today.

In the other case, Pol Sub Lt Thatree Suebsamarn, deputy inspector of Thong Lor police station, has been accused of kidnapping and raping an 18-year-old Lao woman at an apartment in Samut Prakan.

He allegedly committed the crime on April 20 while working his night job as a taxi driver.

He is accused of forcing the victim's boyfriend out of his taxi and taking the woman to his apartment, before raping her repeatedly.He allegedly released her the next morning and identified himself as a police officer, gave the victim his contact number and warned her that if she made a complaint to the police he would kill her. The suspect remains at large.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said both officers had been suspended from service while the investigations are being conducted.
