Today is Friday, so Bangkok Post subscribers receive Guru magazine with their newspaper. It is not exactly heavy reading. Here is an excerpt from today's "Editor's note” by Sumati Sivasiamphai and I am sure you will see what I mean.

It begins like a serious news story, but that doesn't last long.

What?! We have a curfew?!

BANGKOK – A recent proposal to extend the closing times of nightlife establishments has shocked a nation who had no idea there was even a curfew to begin with.

The proposition, as reported in the Bangkok Post, comes from the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), who has suggested that bars and nightclubs should close at 4am instead of 2am. The MPB believes this move will help prepare Thailand for the launch of the Asean Economic Community in 2015, and will submit the plan for the two-hour extension to the Interior Ministry for review.

When questioned on his thoughts about the possible extended curfew, a reveler falling off his chair at an undisclosed booze-wagon on Sukhumvit Soi 11 at 5am said, " Man, I love this drink! Drink, you are my best friend in the world! Wait, what was the question?"

Similar sentiments expressing unawareness of any sort of curfew was reported throughout the Sukhumvit area and beyond.

"If venues are supposed to close at 2am, why am I just going home now at 8am?", a baffled partygoer rhetorically slurred while stumbling out of a dark Sathon dive bar.

"But you probably shouldn't trust anything I say because I can't even recall where I was before this," continued the partygoer who asked not to be named, but mostly because he couldn't remember his name.
