The ATM is next to the district office building and only 100 metres from a police station.

The ATM was filled with five million baht in cash on Friday at 11.30am and the money was gone the next day at 1.30am, said Pol Col Wichian Sooksiri, chief of Si Sa Ket provincial investigation division.

The thieves cut the power cord and shut down the ATM and security camera. They used a gas cutter to break open two locks at the back of the ATM booth and then the machine’s cash vault, and made off with 4.95 million baht.

The machine had been filled with 1,000-baht banknotes worth 4.4 million baht, 500-baht banknotes to the value of 500,000 baht and 100-baht banknotes totalling 100,000 baht, Pol Col Wichian added.
