Collagen craze attracts tannery offshoot

Higher demand from image-conscious young people is drawing new companies into the growing beauty products market.

Ms Sarinrat urges consumers to buy collagen products only from reliable sources.

A recent entrant is Cartino Gelatin, a company under Taveesin Tannery, the provider of tanning services to fine leather goods dealers.

After involvement in the tannery trade for more than five decades, the Taveechokesupsin family set up Cartino Gelatin in 2000 to enhance the value of the business.

The newer company began making gelatin derived from collagen obtained from cow skin, supplying it to Japanese companies that make jelly, gum, dairy products and pharmaceuticals.

Now Cartino Gelatin is making its own products under the CollaHealth label unveiled last week. It offers collagen powder and tablets made from fish skin.

Demand for collagen products is rising as more people choose to drink functional drinks, take supplements and go under the knife for cosmetic surgery.

The market size of collagen products in Thailand is 2 billion baht a year. Dozens of brands are available via health food stores, drugstores, mail order and online shopping. Big collagen sellers include Cerebos (Thailand), a subsidiary of the Japanese food and drinks giant Suntory; and ICC International, the fashion marketing arm of the Saha Group, Thailand's largest consumer goods conglomerate.

Collagen benefits the human body, but consumption of non-standard collagen can be harmful.

"At present, many collagen products from China are available in Thailand," said Sarinrat Patawepattranan, the managing director of Cartino Gelatin.

"Thus, customers should be very careful when buying collagen products and check reliable sources."

Duangkamol Tantisuk, the marketing manager for CollaHealth, said the firm received good feedback from users of the products in a free trial.

The company will spend 50 million baht to install more machines at its collagen factory in Samut Prakan province.

Cartino Gelatin's sales totalled 70 million baht last year and are expected to rise to 84 million this year.
