312 lawmakers to defy court's order

The 312 MPs and senators who signed in support of the bill seeking to amend Section 68 of the constitution will not submit the explanations ordered by the Constitution Court, Pheu Thai MP Singthong Thungthong said on Wednesday.

Mr Singthong is one of the 312 lawmakers who supported the bill.

The Constitution Court on May 1 ordered them to each send in an explanation with 15 days, the last day being May 15.

"We will just wait to see what action the court will take against us for doing this and decide what to do later if found to be in the wrong," said the MP.

The court issued the order after it accepted for consideration a petition from a group of senators led by Somchai Sawaengkarn seeking an injunction against the bill proposed by the 312 lawmakers.

Mr Singthon's statement confirms the lawmakers' earlier announcement they would defy the court's order. They argue that the Constitution Court does not have jurisdiction to accept a petition that would prevent legislators amending the charter.
