Aunt accused of procuring niece held

A 43-year-old woman wanted by Thai police for allegedly luring her 17-year-old niece into prostitution in South Korea was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport late on Thursday.

Phiangjai Phanplado or Phiangjai Kim was returning from South Korea at about 9.30pm when she was arrested, said Pol Chusak Apaipak, of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division (AHTD).

She was taken to the AHTD headquarters on Phahon Yothin Road for questioning.

The Criminal Court has approved warrants for the arrest of Ms Phiangjai, a Thai woman named Thippawan Tempao, 26, and a South Korean man, Chun Song-kuem, 36.

Ms Phiangjai, who is wanted for allegedly procuring her niece for the sex trade, denied the accusation, claiming the girl invented the story, Pol Lt Col Chusak said. The girl returned to Thailand on May 18.

On Wednesday, AHTD chief Pol Maj Gen Chawalit Sawaengphuet said Mrs Phiangjai had contacted police investigators and indicated she would surrender to fight the case in court.
