Sukumpol supports border fence

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat agrees with army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha's idea a fence should be built along the southern border to prevent separatist bandits crossing back and forth into Malaysia.

He said the border fence was raised for discussion during a working dinner with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on May 26.

The idea is viable, but would be costly, ACM Sukumpol said.

The fence, whether along the entire border or just some stretches of it, would not only deter the cross-border movements of separatist rebels but also make it harder for smugglers.

However, no decision was made at the meeting and no feasibility study had been ordered, ACM Sukumpol said.

Asked about a third video clip posted on YouTube on Wednesday by the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), featuring Hassan Taib Abdulkarin Kalib calling on Thai authorities to stop violent attacks on the people of Pattani, ACM Sukumpol said the Thai side would deny the allegation at coming talks.

It would be made clear to them that Thai forces are disciplined and strictly follow their superiors' commands.

The video clip also accused Thai authorities of being responsible for many shootings, including the attack on a grocery shop in Pattani on May 1 in which six people, including a two-year-old child, were killed.

Pattani governor Pramuk Lamun, chairman of a committee investigating the attack, said the investigation concluded it was the work of separatist militants.

One of the four weapons used in the shooting was found to have been used in many violent attacks on both Thai and Muslim people, the governor said.

The Thai delegation, led by National Security Council chief Paradorn Pattanatabut, is scheduled to hold the third round of peace talks with the BRN on June 13 in Malaysia.
