Babies named after soap characters

Looking for a name for a newborn male baby? How about "Rachanon" or "Puttipat"? Or maybe "Taratorn", "Pawornruj", or "Ronapee"?

Maybe that's not such a good idea, since those names are no longer so special.

They, of course, are the names of the five male protagonists in the popular "Suparbburuth Chutathep" TV soap opera series.

According to a report in Matichon, well over 1,000 babies across Thailand have been named after these characters.

The two most popular characters were "Rachanon" and "Puttipat", with 664 and 412 children named after them respectively, Chuan Sirinanporn, director-general of the Provincial Administration Department was quoted as saying.

A total of five soap operas, or lakorn, were based on the novels that sparked the show, a five-book series. They were broadcast by Channel 3 and were very popular. Each show told the love story of one of five kun chai, or noblemen, of the Chutathep family.

The series of five novels was published by Satapornbooks Co, beginning in 2011. There have been many reprints.
