The moment Grayson hears his Daddy speak for the first time is caught on video.
Grayson can hear!!
Grayson, a three-year-old, has started to babble and is working hard to learn some words to say. He's a little late compared to other children, but Grayson has had a few more challenges in his life than other children his age.
Apart from heart surgery and the loss of sight in one eye, until May 21 this year, he had never heard a sound. He was completely deaf.
Grayson was born without the nerves (the cochlear nerves) that take sound from the inner ear to the brain. Surgeons at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. implanted a device into his brainstem that corrected the missing connection, the first time this has been done with a child.

What is it like to hear for the first time? It is quite dramatic. Watch this video and you will see what I mean. You might get a few tears in your eyes as well.
Can you watch the video without tears coming to your eyes?
We've got an update this morning on a touching story we brought you on Thursday, the remarkable moment, captured on camera, when a child who was born deaf, hears for the first time. Here's NBC's Kate Snow.
A child's look of wonder as he hears his father's words for the first time in his young life.
"Talk to him Daddy."
"Daddy loves you. Daddy loves you. Can you hear Daddy?"
"Get in his face, Len."
"Daddy loves you."
At just three years old, Grayson Clamp is already a survivor. Braving open-hear surgery as a one-month old, a loss of vision in his left eye, unable to hear since birth. His adoptive parents had tried everything, but then they learned about a groundbreaking clinical trial. In April, he became the first child to have a device surgically implanted into the base of his brainstem.
"Grayson, Grayson. That's you."
All told, countless hours of work leading up to this incredible moment in May when the device was activated.
When they turned that thing on and it worked; he responded to that sound, it was like just a weight was lifted off me.
For Grayson and his parents Nicolle and Len, it's a victory, but also just the first step. Now able to hear, Grayson must begin the process of interpreting and forming words for himself. His parents look forward to the day he'll be able to speak with them and his best friend, younger brother Ethan.
"It has, you know, opened up a whole new world to him. His brain is still having to get used to this new stimulus because he's never heard sound before, so he's still learning what it is, what to do with it..."
And while there's a lot for Grayson to learn, there is one thing, he already knows for certain.
"Daddy loves you. Daddy loves you."
