Mae Sot travel pass to be extended

Mae Sot travel pass to be extended

Thai authorities have agreed with a proposal to allow Myanmar nationals with border passes obtained from checkpoints in Mae Sot, in Tak province, to travel as far as Sukhothai.

Currently, border pass holders have to remain in the Mae Sot area. Sukhothai is 200 kilometres from Tak.

However, the proposal, approved by Tak officials, military officers and Immigration Bureau and Customs Department staff at a meeting on Wednesday, must be forwarded to the Interior Ministry for consideration, Mae Sot district chief Preecha Chaiphet said.

Myanmar had earlier suggested Thailand allow its citizens entering through Mae Sot border checkpoints to travel as far as Phitsanulok.

Myanmar in return would allow Thais to travel to Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State, which is about 200km from the border.

However, officials considering the proposal agreed only to allow pass holders to travel as far as Sukhothai, which is a World Heritage Site, Mr Preecha said.
