Ministry to probe grade-fixing claims

An Education Ministry legal team will be sent to help investigate a complaint that a rector of a well-known university fixed grades in eight subjects for his son.

A group of university lecturers from King Mongkut Institute of Technology Lat Krabang (KMITL) submitted the complaint to the Office of the Higher Education Commission (Ohec) secretary-general Apichart Jeerawut demanding a probe against the rector, Tawil Paungma.

The university had set up a panel to investigate the claims and the rector was cleared of the allegations. However, the group of academics forwarded the matter to the university council which is launching further investigations.

Mr Tawil denied the allegations.

Deputy Education Minister Sermsak Pongpanich, who oversees Ohec, said that the KMITL was an autonomous university and the ministry should not intervene in its internal conflicts.

The investigating process is under the purview of the university council, chaired by Gen Surayud Chulanont.

However, some Ohec legal officers will be sent to join the investigating team to help look into the case, he said.
