Border troops kill Thai near checkpoint

TAK : The body of a Thai national was found in a creek on Sunday after he was shot while trying to flee from soldiers who approached him for a check near the Thai-Myanmar border on Tuesday.

The body of Suphamit Kesini, 25, was discovered in Wa Le creek near Ban Wa Le Nuea in Tak's Phop Phra district, which borders Myanmar.

On Tuesday, the man, together with a Karen friend, left Ban Wa Le Nuea and crossed the village bridge on their way to Myanmar. The two later returned and were spotted by Thai soldiers stationed at the Thai-Myanmar border.

The soldiers approached them for an inspection, but they allegedly fled suddenly, according to a police investigation. Suphamit ran and tried to cross back into Myanmar.

Ban Wa Le Nuea residents told police they heard gun shots around this time, but could not say who fired them. Police said Suphamit was related to a local politician in Tak.

The Karen person fled into Thai territory and was still at large.

The 4th Infantry Regiment's taskforce in Tak is questioning its soldiers over the incident.

Suphamit's mother, Molaeng, on Sunday lodged a complaint with Phop Phra police against two unidentified Thai soldiers she accused of shooting her son. A relative of the victim, who asked not to be named, also claimed a representative of taskforce chief Col Ukrit Nutkhamhaeng met Suphamit's family to offer help.
