Canadian waives extradition trial

Public prosecutors on Wednesday filed an extradition request in court for a Canadian suspect wanted by US authorities in connection with a penny stock scam.

Gregory Curry, 63, is escorted to a courtroom in Bangkok yesterday. He and a fellow Canadian, Sandy Winick, 55, are accused of scamming more than $140 million from investors worldwide in a penny stock fraud.

They also requested that Gregory Curry, 63, who was arrested in Prachin Buri's Kabin Buri district on Tuesday, be detained until his extradition.

Prosecutors believe the suspect would skip the country if he were granted bail.

Mr Curry will be extradited to the US, said prosecutor Yaowalak Thongho who submitted the extradition request.

The suspect has given a written statement saying he was willing to be extradited to the US, Ms Yaowalak said.

Mr Curry had testified in court, which is yet to make its decision on the extradition application.

Another Canadian suspect, Sandy Winick, 55, was arrested on Monday in Bangkok. The two suspects are among nine indicted on charges of bilking investors in about 35 countries of over $140 million (4.38 billion baht), the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York said. Extradition must take place within 90 days of the court ruling.
