Crackdown on Walking Street crime

CHON BURI - More than 100 women and transgender people were rounded up by police on Wednesday night on Pattaya's Walking Street.

Police said the raid followed a series of complaints of tourists being robbed and cheated.

The women and the transgenders were taken to Pattaya police station and were fined for loitering, warned about their behaviour and released.

Police said the operation was part of a plan to create social order and improve the image of Pattaya by tackling crimes against tourists.

Four days ago, two elderly foreign men, one British and one Italian, were robbed in Pattaya by massage women they picked up on the first day of their visit.

Salvatore Mancuso, 61, a British national who said he was a journalist, and his Italian friend Dolece Sraldo, 63, told police they arrived Thailand and went directly to an apartment in Central Pattaya. They were drugged and valuables worth more than 600,000 baht allegedly stolen from them.
