Tourist's iPhone stolen, 2 guides held

Two tour guides were arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing valuables from a tourist in Patpong, Bangkok police.

Pol Lt Col Siam Insuwanno, deputy superintendent of Thung Mahamek police station, said the two suspects were named as Sommai Tubtim, 42, and Ritthicha Kongsomboon, 53.

The victim, whose name was withheld, told investigators that he was attacked by a group of three men after he left a night entertainment venue in Patpong. The three men stole his valuables, including an iPhone 5 smartphone, and fled.

After police checked footage from closed circuit television cameras in the area and spoke to people who witnessed the incident, they found out that two of the three suspects were Mr Sommai and Mr Ritthichai. The third suspect was a waiter named Toon, who is still at large.

Police arrested the two tour guides while they were walking along Silom Road.

Both men denied that they attacked the tourist. They claimed that they saw their friend Toon beating up the man on the street as they were about to return home from work.

According to their testimonies, Mr Toon told them that he would share some of the stolen valuables with them. Mr Toon then stole the tourist's smartphone and sold it to a shop on Petchaburi Road for 13,000 baht. Mr Sommai and Mr Ritthichai each received 4,000 baht from Toon.

Police did not believe the two men entirely and said they had been charged with theft.
