Shizuoka launches “Hojicha” premium green tea from 400-year old tea plantation in Japan’s Capital of Tea

Shizuoka Prefecture, known as Japan’s Capital of Tea, joins hand with Ichitan in introducing “Hojicha” ready-to-drink green tea to Thai market. The premium green tea sets to create another phenomenon and win tea lovers’ heart with its premium tea quality made from Japan’s highly recognized “Ohashi Family’s Kawane Tea Plantation” which has more than 400 years of expertise in producing Hojicha

The success of Shizuoka ready-to-drink green tea, a cooperation between Shizuoka Prefecture and Ichitan, since its launch in 2018 has convinced both parties to bring another excitement to the market. “Hojicha” is the famous green tea specially roasted to produce unique golden-brown colour and soothing earthy aroma. Without added sugar, Hojicha provides natural sweet flavour and contains low caffeine. However, the level of catechin, the renown anti-oxidant rich in green tea, remain. In Japan, Hojicha can be consumed by people of all age as drinking water replacement.

“Shizuoka Hojicha” is made from 100% imported high quality tea leaves from the Kawane Tea Plantation owned by Ohashi Family, one of Japan’s oldest tea experts. Established by Somon Ohashi back in 1600, the over-400-year-old tea plantation is surrounded by forest-covered mountains of Kawane, which is the region known as the best place to grow tea in Japan. Kawane Tea Plantation is also the first plantation in Shizuoka that has grown Organic Tencha, a key ingredient that adds a soft and luxurious flavor referred by the Japanese as Zeitaku to Shizuoka Hojicha.

Kazuteru Ohashi, the owner of Kawane Tea Plantation and President and CEO of Kawane Matcha, said, “Kawane Tea Plantation is located in Kakewaka city in Shizuoka Prefecture. It was built by Somon Ohashi back in 1600 and his philosophy in tea growing has been passed on in the family until today. We, the 13rd generation, have continued to produce the best quality tea using the knowledge handed down from our ancestors, especially in making the leaves, matcha powder and Hojicha, which all are our expertise. We hope the tea leaves will bridge our passion for tea to all tea lovers in Thailand.”

Shizuoka green tea is known as the best tea from the best tea region. Shizuoka is the No. 1 tea growing region in Japan given the perfect weather and water from snow on top of Fuji which is rich in minerals. The product is the first and only one with the right to use the “Fujipi”, Shizuoka’s mascot, and the official partnership of the Shizuoka Tea Export Association.
