Two-seat mid-engine roadster takes the fight straight to the McLaren 720S Spider.
That’s quite a swift follow-up…
Competition in the supercar market is becoming more intense than ever explaining why makers are now rolling out new models on a quicker basis.
After unveiling the mid-engined F8 Tributo earlier this year, Ferrari has this week revealed the open-top version called F8 Spider.
The F8 Spider has a retractable hard-top that can open or close in 14sec at speeds within 45kph. Note the fashionable buttresses makers love to use on two-seat roadsters.
Powering the F8 Spider is the 720hp 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 as used in the F8 Tributo and 488 Pista. It replaces the 488 Spider which had a less potent 670hp and weighed 20kg more overall.
As a result, the F8 Spider goes from 0-100kph in 2.9sec, a full second quicker than the 488 Spider but on par with the 488 Pista.
What’s the point of the F8 Spider then?
Ferrari puts it like this. The F8 Spider is sportier than the 488 Spider but not as raw as the 488 Pista. Actually, it’s a pitch the Italians are also using with the F8 Tributo against the 488 Berlinetta and 488 Pista.
But possibly the more important reason the F8 Spider needs to have some decent levels of comfort and refinement is due to its competition.
The most direct rival for the F8 Spider is the McLaren 720S Spider whose power and acceleration time is exactly the same with the Italian stallion. The British counterpart is claimed to be a highly usable supercar for the real world.
Expect the F8 Spider to cost around 2-3 million baht more than the F8 Tributo, which is set to be priced from around 25 million baht when sales start later this year.
