Chatuchak locals 'won't lose homes'

The Treasury Department on Wednesday assured a community in Chatuchak district that it would not appropriate land on which the community is located to pave the way for the revival of a mass transit terminal project.

Yutthana Yimkarun, the department's director-general, gave his assurance to community residents during a visit to the project site.

Mr Yutthana said the project was under the department's supervision.

The community land, which is behind the old Mor Chit bus station, is part of a 63-rai land development project initiated in 1996 following the relocation of the Mor Chit bus station on Phahon Yothin Road.

The land appropriation scheme was put on hold due to a number of problems which had arisen without an obvious solution.

Following reports the development project was being revived, community residents were concerned they would be evicted to pave way for the development.

Mr Yutthana said an agreement was reached at a Feb 15 meeting between the Treasury Department, the Department of Land Transport, Transport Co and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) over the land for the project.

He said the developer, BKT, agreed to reduce the amount of land to mitigate the impact on the surrounding residential community and a new environment impact assessment would be conducted.

He said that after a new contract with the project developer was signed, the BMA would be asked to revoke an order for the appropriation of the land.

The development of the project was stalled due to both the 1997 economic crisis and allegations of corruption over the original concession award.

The project was envisioned as including a new office complex and transport hub serving bus routes to northeastern and northern Thailand.
