Former US president Donald Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday in an incident described as an assassination attempt.

Trump was shot in the ear and treated at a local medical facility, before taking to social media to ask Americans to "stand united".

One spectator at the rally was killed, and two others were critically injured.

The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by the Secret Service but questions are now being asked, not only about the shooter’s motive, but about how lapses in security allowed the events to unfold.

President Joe Biden called the shooting "sick".
