Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra will go southward, bringing live symphonic music to Yala Rajabhat University in Yala province and to Dewan Sri Pinang auditorium in Penang, Malaysia, as part of its annual Asian tour on Saturday and Monday, both starting at 7pm.
The programme for the "TPO Concert In Yala" will feature Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 In D Minor, Op 47, Narong Prangcharoen's Phenomenon, Gershwin's The Man I Love, King Bhumibol's royal compositions No Moon and HM Blues, and Thai-Malay traditional music.
The orchestra will be conducted by American Delta David Gier with Cherryl J. Hayes (vocals) and Krit Buranavitayawut (saxophone) as guest soloists.
Held to mark the 60th anniversary of Thailand-Malaysia diplomatic relations, the "TPO Concert In Penang" will feature a similar programme, except for the Thai-Malay traditional music part, which will be replaced with Malaysian traditional music.
For the third consecutive year, the TPO has served as a cultural ambassador by travelling to perform concerts in Asean countries. Previously, the ensemble performed in Vientiane, Laos in 2015 and in Yangon, Mandalay, and Nawpyidaw, Myanmar in 2016.
Performances feature popular local folk songs and masterworks of the Western classical repertoire. Local artists are invited to join the performances. The resulting collaboration is a showcase of shared friendships and cultural values.
There is no admission fee but advanced reservations are recommended. Tickets for the Yala show are available from the Public Relations of Yala City Municipality (tel 073-216-738). Tickets for the Penang show can be collected at the Royal Thai Consulate-General (tel 604-228-6784 ext 103), Bentley Music Showroom (tel 604-226-2333) and Penang Philharmonic Orchestra (tel 604-262-2462).
