S Korean thriller makes history

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

South Korean thriller Parasite made history on Sunday night when it became the film foreign-language film to win the Academy Award for best picture.

The film, which tells the story of a poor South Korean family that infiltrates a wealthy household, won a total of four awards including best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international feature, defying the received wisdom that the Academy would overlook a subtitled Asian movie.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony which took place at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles also saw Renee Zellweger make a magical comeback winning her second Oscar as she took home the best actress award for her portrayal of Judy Garland on a late-life comeback tour in Judy.

Other nominees included Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron and Saoirse Ronan.

Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix netted his first Oscar for Joker, besting a packed field of best actor nominees that included Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce.
