Like other lifestyle genres such as music and film, art is a medium through which artists speak to the world. Many art exhibitions these days are therefore not just a feast for the eyes. They also raise questions about issues in society and subsequently serve as food for thought for the audience.
Here are art exhibitions currently on display through which artists address issues around them, be they the environment, capitalism, technology and even the novel coronavirus.
#ARTNODISTANCE
Where: River City Bangkok, Yotha Road
When: Until Aug 31
During the Covid-19 lockdown, River City Bangkok launched a campaign titled "#Artnodistance" and invited people from all walks of life, not just professional artists, to create their own artwork at home as they believe art can serve as healing for the soul.
The "#Artnodistance" exhibition, therefore, has put up works created by all art lovers during the quarantine. River City Bangkok is also honoured to have reputable artists contributing to this creative campaign.
Artwork is made up of seven categories based on their concepts which are self-reflection, new activities, Covid-19 and masks, the city, conceptualism, love expression and escape. Admission is free.
The Sea Ghost And Beyond
Where: Nova Contemporary, Ratchadamri Road
When: Until Sept 19
The first solo exhibition with Nova Contemporary by artist Ploenchan Vinyaratn, "The Sea Ghost And Beyond" is inspired by how discarded fishing nets have wreaked havoc on sea life. Each piece explores the interconnected relationship between humans and the environment. Ploenchan decided to weave a utopian vision by exploring and incorporating the unwanted such as scraps of waste fabrics and dead-stock yarns and sea waste, as well as non-traditional elements -- including hand-spun paper documents and used stockings -- to construct a vivid, intricate conglomerate.
Post Apocalypse
Where: Buffalo Bridge Gallery, Phahon Yothin Road
When: Until Aug 22
The "Post Apocalypse" exhibition serves as a centre for the visual impact of rising technology, increasing population and deteriorating environment in today's world. The artwork on display reflects on the issues of global environment and things that are about to intensify due to the problem of how humanity treats the world. At the exhibition, visitors will be able to imagine a future world that cannot be predicted. It is the knowledge that all human beings must share responsibility for the world in which we all live together.
