Dozens of classic Chinese ink paintings are showcased during "Chinese Xieyi: Art From The National Art Museum Of China" which kicks off today and runs until Feb 18 next year, at the Main Building of the National Gallery of Thailand.

Held to mark diplomatic relations between China and Thailand which were established nearly half-a-century ago and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the National Art Museum of China, the exhibition brings an exceptionally curated selection of 63 pieces of paintings and sculptures by 42 famous artists from China.

Meaning "writing the meaning down", Xieyi is a form of traditional Chinese painting characterised by vivid expression and bold outlines. The technique is marked by exaggerated forms and freehand brushwork to express the idea or thoughts in an artist's heart or mind.

This exhibition aims to promote cooperation in art and culture and to officially disseminate valuable visual artworks by Chinese artists to the Thai people for the first time.

The opening reception is today at 5pm. The National Gallery is on Chao Fa Road and opens Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Admission fee is 200 baht for foreign visitors (30 baht for Thai visitors). However, entry is free during the year-end celebrations until Jan 5.
