Before you get hangry, get Street Mad

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

In passing, you may mistake Street Mad for just another generic burger stand trying to emulate Murican fast food as authentically as possible. However, a good look at the menu and a little bit of insider knowledge will reveal this street burger brand's charm and sophistication.

The guys behind Street Mad are best buds Pat Nagvajara and Tee Teachasuttipong, who each have five years of experience working for high profile tables, including several five star hotel restaurants and Vogue Lounge. For their big leap to self-employment, the duo were initially planning to open an upscale Asian eatery in Thonglor, but opportunity didn't come soon enough. So instead, they invested in a tiny grill and a banner and some light bulbs for decor, and began their pattie-flipping tour from one pop-up event to another.

Street Mad's burgers uniquely combine Asian flavours with neat European techniques, and each of the four signatures are intriguing and memorable. The first time we ran into them at CentralWorld's Lemonade market, we had to try "The Killer" (B200), a fried soft-shell crab burger featuring garlic mayo, fresh red grapes and green chilli emulsion. A few weeks later, we followed them to K Village for a more traditional Mad melt beef cheese (B180).

What consistently strikes us about Street Mad is the bros' on-point understanding of pairings: green chilli and garlic with crab, Korean barbeque for pulled pork, Romessco for fried chicken and a sweet kick for a classic beef patty. At the same time, despite the unconventional elements, the burgers are not over-the-top nor trying too hard. Rather than ensuring customers can taste twenty separate ingredients in one bite, Street Mad's burgers emphasise the taste of the main meat and the seasoning. Simple, but effective.

Along Pat and Tee's positive vibes and exceptional hospitality, we hope to see Street Mad again at roadshows and eventually, perhaps, settle down somewhere nearby.
