BANGKOK ILLUMINATION 2020

  • Iconsiam
  • Charoen Nakhon Road
  • Until Dec 30

Iconsiam's aptly-named riverside River Park has been riddled with light art installations to mark the festive season. In the same vein that Iconsiam's architecture is a celebration of Thai culture, "Bangkok Illumination 2020" also blends in Thai culture with the Christmas-themed decorations and light shows. The Christmas trees are decorated by Mike Perry, an American artist who won an Emmy for animation for an episode of Broad City. The trees are meant to show the uniqueness of "Thai-ness" with Perry taking inspiration from Buddhist temples and turning them into contemporary colourful patterns that cover the trees. There are also two art installations: the "Infinity Forest", with interactive light chambers created by New York-based design studio Softlab, and two illuminated figures named "Fantastic Planet" from Australian visual artist Amanda Parer. Combined with the stunning riverside view, "Bangkok Illumination 2020" is a festive decoration that's worthy of your IG feed.

If you're coming in from the pathway from BTS Phloen Chit, you're going to have to go through "The Illuminated Candy Cane Hallway". Despite only being a few metres long, I'm betting you'll spend a good 10-15 minutes taking pics for your IG or filming content for your TikTok. Yes, TikTok. Don't pretend you don't have an account.
