The "Chinese New Year 2021" celebration at the Market Bangkok, Ratchaprasong, kicks off today and is offering an opportunity to pay homage to Chinese gods while enjoying many activities until the end of the month.
Visitors are invited to ask for a blessing from the statues of three Chinese gods that are housed at the R Walk on M floor. They are Tai Suay Eia (god of fortune), Phra Sangkrachai (Buddhist saint) and Guan Yin Bodhisattva (goddess of compassion and mercy).
Also, there is an opportunity to witness a spectacular lion dance and golden dragon emperor dance performed by the Singapore-Thai Yi Sen Club, winner of the Thailand Championship in 2018. Earlier, the group had won ninth place in the 12th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2016.
They will show off their stunts in unison with strong and beautiful moves on Chinese New Year on Friday, at 11.30am. It will be followed by a guzheng (Chinese plucked zither) performance by Annie the Guzheng Angel, a blind girl reputed for rendering very touching melodies, at noon, 3pm and 6pm. She will give three more shows on Valentine's Day on Sunday at the same time.
Visitors are also invited to take part in a festive modern Chinese atmosphere as the shopping centre has been decorated with Chinese lanterns, large Mei flowers (meihua) or plum blossoms, and a colourful tunnel believed to bring fortune to everyone who walks through it.
Exclusively from Friday to next Tuesday, a variety of auspicious items such as amulets, jewellery, auspicious plants, feng-shui enhancing home decor items, clothing and food will be available at the R Walk.
For those interested in horoscopes, they can scan a QR code available at many points and read it free right on their gadgets. There's also a chance to get one complimentary refreshing drink from participating shops (limited to 50 drinks a day).
