A tri-eye phone

The Huawei P20 Pro is the first phone equipped with three lenses whose performance can rival pro cameras

TECH

Phones have come a long way at improving image and video taking. Many people, me included, use them as a primary device to take photos. Is a phone that comes with three professional-level Leica lenses appealing to you?

Huawei really goes to town to make sure that its P20 Pro's photo-taking aspect stands out from the crowd by popping in a 5x optical zoom-enabled 40MP Leica brand lens, a 20MP monochrome lens and also an 8MP telephoto lens. Three lenses that take different shots of the same scene then combines them to create over-the-top vivid photos that are ready for Instagram without additional editing. Also, if you are the impatient type, you'll be happy with the speed of this phone's split-second photo-taking (and photo-processing) time.

The camera app has plenty of settings and presets for you to twiddle with, although the same can't be said for video, which has a lot less things for you to tweak.

Huawei's engineers are also very proud of the artificial intelligence embedded in the phone's cameras, which detects the main object and adjusts white balance accordingly. For example, if the phone detects you're taking a photograph of a cat, it will sharpen its focus on the feline while oversaturating background colours, which makes the main object pop. The image viewer app also has a robust photo editor that lets you edit and adjust colour.

This also is one of the few phones that can take clear photos in very low light.

Selfie lovers will appreciate the 24MP frontal camera. It also comes with an aggressive beautify adjustment that can create the perfect selfie that will be the envy of your friends.

The phone's personal identity system is fast too. The bottom front fingerprint reader takes a split-second to detect your ownership and unlocks it with no need of pressing. Face unlock detection is fast as well.

Trend games such as Garena RoV and Seven Knights run without any lag or hiccups.

The design is all glass with a metal frame, which feels thick and sturdy. Too bad the rear camera hump will make the phone wobble when the phone is placed on a table.

It has a vivid OLED screen that provides up to 2240x1080 resolution. But having an unconventional aspect ratio means many apps look a bit weird or simply do not support this wider-then-usual screen.

Dual-speakers are a thing these days, and this phone has it.

Huawei has a tendency to be very aggressive with RAM management and usually clears apps in the background immediately, which may cause you to relaunch the apps from scratch.

The built-in 4,000mAh battery is ample to get you through the day and can fast charge from 0-50% in half-an-hour, but has no wireless charging.

This phone can be connected to a screen, mouse and keyboard (dongles needed) and you'll get something very similar to Windows 10 to use. Very handy for light computing or presentations.

Still, the infamous top notch, just like the iPhone X, is a little obtrusive.

This Huawei P20 Pro will suit people who love to snap perfect photos with all the bells and whistles it comes with.
