As food fairs go, Doen Kin Thin Na Klua is up there with the best of them. But time is running out if you wish to enjoy this year's event, with only this weekend and next Saturday left to go.
The annual food festival, which runs for roughly two months, is held along the northern section of Pattaya-Na Klua Road, from the landmark Bodhi tree at Lan Pho Na Klua Market all the way to Saphan Yao, the bridge at the mouth of Na Klua canal. Each festival day from 4pm until around 11pm, the 500m-long stretch is closed to traffic and lined with hundreds of stalls. Vendors gather to sell all manner of home-made goodies, from chaeng lon (barbecued spicy fish cake), hor mok (steamed fish cake) and grilled squid to miang kam (peanut, dried shrimp, bits of shallot and lime with peel, and sweet coconut sauce wrapped in betal leaves) and tons of other traditional snacks. You can also get sweet treats like ice cream, and a range of refreshing beverages, including coconut water and fruit juice.
Live entertainment is provided by both professional and amateur performers. On the main stage, towards the southern end, troupes of dancers from local schools take turns to perform shows they have trained hard for. For the children and their parents, the festival is much more than a food fair. For the audience, the shows just add to any already great atmosphere.
The Doen Kin Thin Na Klua Fair is less than 3.5km from the Dolphin Circle in Pattaya, and takes about 10 minutes in a songthaew.
