Kanit Na Nakorn, chairman of the Truth for Reconciliation Commission (TRC), has issued an open letter calling for the government and parliament, particularly the ruling Pheu Thai Party, not to rush the four reconciliation bills, to reduce tensions and help prevent the possibility of violence.
He said in the letter that the TRC was worried by the political developments between May 30 and June 1, fearing they could lead to another round of conflict.
Mr Kanit said the government and parliament, particularly the Pheu Thai Party which has a majority in the House of Representatives, not to rush the reconciliation bills through the House, to prevent further conflict in society.
The government and parliament should instead arrange forums where the public to voice their opinions on the bills. The people should also be informed of the bills in detail, and about the proposed amnesty for political offenders.
Mr Kanit said the TRC was concerned about the melee in the House chamber on May 30-June 1. All concerned should accept responsibility for what happened to maintain the standard of conduct of parliamentarians.
In a situation where political conflict is high, the judiciary must do its best to maintain the sanctity of the law and justice, he said.
The Constitution Court, in particular, should be extremely careful in making any ruling in this situation, otherwise the people may lose their faith in the judiciary, the legal system, and the rule of law, he said.
