Wandee, now a navy lieutenant and a coach, finished fourth in Beijing.

However, she was promoted to third after second-placed Marina Shainova was found to have used banned substances.

Having also claimed a bronze at the 2004 Olympics, Wandee, 39, becomes the first Thai female Olympian to have won more than one medal.

Boxer Manus Boonjumnong is Thailand's only other Olympic multi-medal winner with his gold at Athens 2004 and silver at Beijing 2008.

Wandee received the 2008 Olympic medal from Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, at its headquarters in Bangkok yesterday.

"I am very happy that I have helped enhance the country's reputation," said Wandee.

"It's been a long time since the 2008 Olympics. I am now a weightlifting coach in Surat Thani and trying to help groom young athletes."

As a 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, the Si Sa Ket native will receive two million baht in bonus from the government's National Sports Development Fund. She will also get a monthly salary of 8,000 baht for 20 years. She has already received a similar reward from winning a bronze at Athens 2004.

Since 2015, the International Olympic Committee has re-tested more than 1,000 samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics resulting in 106 positive results and 75 medals being redistributed.

The worst offending country has been Russia with 37 positive tests, ahead of Belarus with 16. Weightlifting has been the sport hardest hit with 49 positives, ahead of athletics with 46.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), met Deputy Prime Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn and Gen Prawit to talk about the possibility of Thailand hosting the 2021 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

Gen Tanasak said Thailand was interested in staging the event but a final decision rests with his colleagues in the government. He did not give any indication of when they might decide.
