Political scientist Likhit dies at 75

Prof Likhit Dhiravegin, a fellow of the Royal Institute and eminent political scientist, died of cancer on Sunday night at Phramongkutklao Hospital. He was 75.

Born on May 11, 1941, Likhit graduated in law in 1966 from Thammasat University, where he was also awarded a master's degree in law and diplomacy in 1969.

He obtained a masters degree in political science from Brown University, the United States, in 1970, and a doctorate from the same university in 1972.

Likhit began his career as a political science lecturer at Thammsat University. He was appointed dean of the Faculty of Political Science in 1983. He became vice-rector of the university in 1988 and was appointed a fellow of the Royal Institute in 2004.

He entered politics in 2001 and was a party-list MP for the New Aspiration Party, serving as deputy interior minister in the Chavalit Yongchaiyudh government.

Likhit later moved to the Thai Rak Thai Party, serving as an executive committee member and party-list MP. He was also a newspaper columnist and wrote for the Bangkok Post.
