Prominent astronomer Prof Rawi dies

Prominent astronomer and thinker Emeritus Professor Rawi Phawilai died peacefully in the early hours of Friday at the age of 91 years.

Prof Rawi was one of nine National Artists named in 2012,  in the category of literature. He authored and translate a total of 21 books including the translation of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and children's fantasy novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, into Thai from English.

Prof Rawi was a member of Thailand's Royal Institute and president of the Thai Astronomical Society. He was also a member of the Office of the Royal Society.

By profession, Prof Rawi was a lecturer at Chulalongkorn's faculty of physics, where he started working at the age of 19 and stayed until his retirement in 1986.

Prof Rawi had three children.
