Chiang Mai airport escalator collapse investigated

CHIANG MAI: Some steps on an escalator at Chiang Mai International Airport collapsed suddenly on Saturday morning while it was moving, scaring passengers.

Nobody was hurt at the incident in the outbound passenger terminal at around 6am, according to media reports.

The escalator had started to move upward when a few steps suddenly collapsed. Nobody was injured in the incident that happened at 6am. The escalator was closed pending an investigation.

An initial investigation found that the escalator, which was near a departure gate, had developed trouble as it had been used by many passengers.

Airport officials advised passengers to use other escalators and lifts in the middle zone of the terminal.

Gp Cpt Manathanik Rakngam, the general manager of the airport, said the escalator was under repair and was expected to reopen later on Saturday.
