A depression southeast of Hainan will land in upper Vietnam on Wednesday and Thursday and bring heavy rain to the Northeast, the North and the East of Thailand, according to the Meteorological Department forecast issued on Tuesday.

Director-general Phuwieng Prakhammintara said the storm, with wind speeds up to 53 kilometres per hour,  was currently in the upper part of the South China Sea, about 230km southeast of Hainan island.

It was moving westwards at 18kph and would be in upper Vietnam on Wednesday and Thursday. Consequently there would be heavy rain in many provinces in the Northeast, the North and the East on these two days. Mountain runoff was a risk in the regions.

The storm would also bring rain to the Central Plains, Mr Phuwieng said.

Meanwhile, the strong southwesterly monsoon still covers the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. Small boats are advised to remain ashore.
