Self-shooting judge leaves hospital

A judge who shot himself in an apparent protest against alleged meddling in one of his cases was yesterday allowed to return home after spending 11 days in Yala Regional Hospital.

Khanakorn Pianchana was seen leaving the hospital in the company of Aniruj Jaithiang, the Yala court chief judge and court police.

Banyong Laocharoensuk, director of the hospital, said Mr Khanakorn's injuries are almost fully healed so he is able to recuperate at home.

Earlier, the hospital said he had sustained injuries to his spleen from the self-shooting and was given medication to stop the bleeding. Dr Banyong also said a team of mental health specialists had already spoken with the judge to assess his mental health and concluded that he was mentally stable.

The Oct 4 shooting was believed to be related to alleged interference in a case in which the judge acquitted five defendants who were charged with the shooting of five people in Yala's Bannang Sata district in June last year.

On Oct 7, the Judicial Commission set up a judicial subcommittee to investigate the shooting and submit its findings within 15 days.
