KHON KAEN: A couple who contracted Covid-19 from their son have fully recovered and been discharged from the hospital amid cheers from doctors and health officials providing the treatment.
The woman, 63, and her husband, 65, are the fifth and sixth Covid-19 patients of the northeastern province. They were allowed to return home at Kud Nam Sai village on Saturday morning.
As soon as the couple went down from the second floor of Khon Kaen Hospital, they were greeted by doctors, nurses and health officials who gave them flowers. The pair burst into tears of joy and got on a hospital van that brought them home.
Dr Charnchai Chanvorachaikul, director of Khon Kaen Hospital, said he was pleased to see the two patients fully recover after 26 days. In fact, the woman had recovered first but still had knee pain unrelated to the virus. Doctors decided to keep her at the hospital because she would have had to live alone and isolate herself had she been discharged at the time.
“The woman contracted the virus from her son. Her condition was quite serious at the time since parts of her lungs were damaged. A team of doctor provided treatment until the couple fully recovered. In any case, we have instructed them to stay away from others for 30 days for good measure,’’ said the hospital director.
Earlier, their son was found to have an antibody and showed no symptoms.
The woman was hospitalised on April 13. Her husband tested positive for the virus two days later. Those who were in close contact with them were not infected.
