Faded car plates to get free repaint

Vehicle licence plates with faded characters can be sent in for repainting, free of charge until the end of this year, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has announced.

The conditions required for a free repaint are that the plate letters must be "3กก to 4กฆ" -- issued in Bangkok and other provinces between Aug 1 and Dec 31 in 2014, DLT director-general Chirute Visalachitra said on Wednesday.

The colour of the paint on the plates issued during this time was found to have faded faster than expected, potentially the result of a mistake during the colour mixture process.

Vehicle owners who are eligible to have their licence plates repainted can contact the DLT directly.

When dropping off the plates, vehicle owners must also bring their car registration manuals or a copy, together with their ID card; corporate car owners must bring the company car certificate.

If car owners cannot proceed by themselves, they must have a power of attorney and details of who granted it.

Moreover, the plates must be clean and their condition must not be distorted in any way, apart from being faded in colour.

If motorists directly head to the DLT's building 7, the repainted plates can be issued on the same day.

Motorists can also contact the Transport Offices, but it will take about a week for the plates to be returned as the offices need to send them to the DLT for repainting before sending them back.

While awaiting the return of their repainted plates, motorists can temporarily present an appointment paper signalling their plates are being repainted to officials.

Additionally, vehicle owners who want their damaged or missing licence plates replaced can contact the department for a new one at a cost of 100 baht each.

Those who need further information can contact Transport Offices across country or dial 1584.
