KANCHANABURI: Border patrols arrested 75 Myanmar nationals who illegally entered the country into Muang and Sangkhla Buri districts on Monday and Tuesday, police said.

A total of 47 men and 28 women were arrested at three locations in the two districts - at Ban Kong Mong Tha in tambon Laiwo and Ban Huay Kop in tambon Nong Lu, Sangkhla Buri district; and at Ban Phu Nam Ron in tambon Ban Kao, Muang district.

The border crossers said they were from Mawlamyine, Yangon, Bago and Rakhine townships, and were heading for promised jobs in Samut Sakhon, Rayong, Kanchanaburi and Bangkok.

Some had paid 15,000-25,000 baht each to brokers, while others were to pay on arriving at their promised workplaces.

Eight Thai guides, seven men and one woman, were also arrested.

The job seekers were handed over to Muang and Sangkhla Buri police for legal proceedings and then deportation.

The Thai guides were charged with providing assistance to foreigners who had illegally entered the country.

All were caught by patrols from the army's Surasee Task Force.
