Phankham: To meet Gen Prayut

Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh will pay an official visit to Thailand this week, Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Monday.

Mr Phankham will be accompanied by his wife for the two-day visit beginning tomorrow.

He will attend an official welcoming ceremony and hold bilateral talks with his Thai counterpart Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House tomorrow.

The official visit -- Mr Phankham's first as Lao prime minister -- will be an important opportunity for both leaders to forge closer ties, especially for the post-Covid-19 economic recovery, he said.

"This visit will be a good opportunity for the two prime ministers to discuss the key areas of bilateral cooperation," he said.

They include the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership for growth and sustainable development; trade and investment promotion; facilitation of cross-border travel and transportation to promote economic activities and livelihoods of people living along border areas; as well as regional connectivity and infrastructure development, particularly connecting the China-Laos-Railway and the Thai rail network.
