B1bn Pathum Thani drug bust

Police seized a large haul of drugs worth an estimated one billion baht after an early morning raid on a house in Pathum Thani's Khlong Luang district on Saturday.

Officers raided a two-storey house in the Summakorn Housing Estate as part of an investigation that had begun on Friday into the alleged use of a fake licence plate.

Police searched the house and found a total of 3,864,000 methamphetamine pills and 71 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ice, hidden in a small room under a staircase,  said Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit Thoopkrachang, acting chief of Region 1 Police.

Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit said the case began after a man, whose name was not disclosed, spotted a white Toyota Camry sedan bearing the licence plate number that belonged to him and alerted highway police to intercept it.

The complainant, who also owned a white Toyota Camry, gave chase to the suspicious car, which was later found in a roadside ditch near the Khlong 4 bus station in Khlong Luang district.

Police said the driver of the car, identified as Nipon Gunchart, fled the scene after fleeing police at high speeds and going off the road.

Police allegedly found 10 grammes of ice in his car.

Further investigation led police to search a condominium unit belonging to Jeerarat Intharat, 25, Mr Nipon's girlfriend, in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district.

Officers discovered 42 grammes of ice in the room. They also found documents that showed Mr Nipon rented a house in the Summakorn Housing Estate, leading to the subsequent police raid and discovery of the huge drug haul.
