Govt to concentrate more on clean energy

The government is focusing on solving global warming issues and promoting the use of clean energy, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Mr Srettha said on Monday he believes clean energy will account for 50% of the country's energy usage in 15 years.

He made the comments in a speech at the "EARTH JUMP 2024: The Edge of Action" event at Samyan Mitrtown.

He said since his government took office about nine months ago, it has been paying attention to global warming and visiting foreign countries to attract investors to Thailand.

According to him, he approached investors who valued three things: benefits, neutrality of power and clean energy.

Thailand has to be ready to compete with other countries, he said, adding that he believes the country has many advantages over its competitors, including the well-being of its citizens, low living expenses and its law.

Mr Srettha went on to say that Laos is Thailand's prospective supplier of clean energy as it has a considerable supply of such energy and is home to several dams. He has had a discussion about the matter with Laos' prime minister, he said.

He also encouraged private financial institutions to provide support to businesses related to clean energy, such as solar companies or electric vehicle (EV) firms. The prime minister added that the government was in talks with the Stock Exchange of Thailand about encouraging clean energy companies to go public.

"I am confident that clean energy will make up 50% of Thailand's energy usage in 2040, or in about 15 years, attributing this to the fact that the country has several dams that can produce a large amount of clean energy," he said.

He also asked for cooperation from large companies to help the government achieve the goal.
